Alimony by state
Spousal support, maintenance or alimony: the name changes by state and so does the method. A few states have a formula, some only set limits, and many leave the amount to the judge.
Official formula
The statute or a statewide court rule gives a formula. Our calculators apply it.
Limits only
The law caps the amount or the length, and the judge decides within those limits.
Judge weighs factors
No formula and no cap: the court looks at the factors the statute lists.
Alimony is often decided together with child support, and in several states spousal support is computed first because it changes the incomes used for child support.
